Abstract

This contribution presents the Latin text and the first translation into Spanish of the Mirabilia urbis Romae, a medieval guide to the city of Rome written between 1140 and 1144. It also includes an introductory study on the manuscript tradition of the earliest testimonies of the work, which allows us to contextualise its genesis and dissemination, while pointing out the main Latin incunabula preserved in the National Library of Spain. Although the text has been the subject of numerous international studies, it has received little attention in the Spanish-speaking world and until now there has been no accessible version for those who do not speak Latin. The translation is based on the critical edition by Valentini and Zucchetti (1946), to which is added an extensive apparatus of explanatory notes and a series of headings that facilitate the organisation of the content by chapters and their reading. The work describes monuments, legends and topographical traditions of Rome, intermingling real and fictitious elements.
