Abstract

Abstract

The predictive accuracy of the three-dimensional Monte Carlo-based plasma-surface interaction code ERO2.0 was evaluated through simulations of tungsten erosion on tungsten-coated divertor plates in the closed helical divertor of LHD during an experimental campaign. The measured intensity profiles of a tungsten emission line near the tungsten-coated divertor plates revealed three characteristic evolutionary phases: low intensities in the initial phase of the campaign, a significant increase in the middle phase, and a rapid decrease in the latter phase, indicating progressive erosion and eventual depletion of the tungsten-coated layers. Postmortem analysis demonstrated complete depletion of the tungsten layers at the strike points on the divertor plates located in the upper-left and lower-right regions of the closed helical divertor. While ERO2.0 reproduced the distribution of erosion-dominant areas, it could not account for the observed complete depletion of the tungsten layers at the end of the campaign. Although the simulations successfully replicated the measured intensity profiles of the tungsten emission line in the initial phase, they could not reproduce the substantially higher intensity profiles measured in the middle phase. The measurements suggest that repeated exposure to plasma heat and particle loads induced cracking and delamination of the tungsten layers, leading to thermal isolation, local overheating, and an effective increase in sputtering yields. The discrepancies between the simulations and measurements highlight the limitations of the current database implemented in ERO2.0, particularly its ignorance of the effects of structural degradation and temperature variations in the tungsten layers on the sputtering yields. Incorporating these factors is essential for improving the predictive accuracy of lifetime estimates for tungsten plasma-facing components.
