Abstract
Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a major metabolic disorder for which the investigation of accessible plant-based dietary interventions remains relevant, particularly in developing countries. This study evaluated the effects of Talinum triangulare leaf powder incorporated into the diet of alloxan-induced diabetic Wistar rats.Twenty rats were allocated into five groups (n = 4): non-diabetic control, diabetic untreated control, diabetic rats treated with glybenclamide, and diabetic rats receiving diets supplemented with 10% or 20% T. triangulare leaf powder.Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal administration of alloxan (170 mg/kg body weight), and rats with blood glucose concentrations ≥300 mg/dL were included in the diabetic groups.Treatments were administered for 45 days.Body weight and blood glucose were monitored during the experimental period, while relative liver and kidney weights and serum concentrations of urea and creatinine, as well as AST and ALT activities, were evaluated at the end of treatment.Alloxan induction produced marked hyperglycaemia and was accompanied by changes in body and organ weights.Dietary supplementation with T. triangulare leaf powder was associated with a significant reduction in blood glucose in both treated groups, with the 20% supplementation group showing a substantial reduction by the end of the experiment.Treatment was also associated with recovery of body weight and reductions in the relative weights of the liver and kidneys compared with untreated diabetic rats.Changes in urea, creatinine, AST, and ALT varied according to treatment group, indicating that these biochemical responses require careful Antidiabetic….
