This theoretical essay uses the term ‘to fit’ and its opposite ‘to misfit’, to offer a theoretical reflection on educational trajectories that, from the perspective of the education system, are understood as forms of disengagement or as paths that deviate from the school norm. To this end, it refers to several works in the sociology of education that have addressed the figure of the “anti-school” student, a topic that has long attracted, concerned, and even fascinated scholars in the field. The aim of the text is to explore the concept of ‘misfit’ by linking it to educational trajectories and to the position of sociology of education as a distinct subdiscipline within sociology. In methodological terms, given the specific nature of this text, a conceptual and documentary analysis was conducted. The text points to some challenges for our field of study in continuing to address the mismatches that emerge in educational trajectories and within the discipline of sociology of education itself.
