Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: Phillis Wheatley’s “On Being Brought from Africa to America” and Claude McKay’s “Enslaved” revolve around the paradox of Western Christian hypocrisy in the enslavement of Africans. The two poets confront the dissonance of Christian discourse of salvation and redemption, and its propensity to carry out slavery. Phillis Wheatley, an eighteenth-century Black poet uses stylistic devices to exhibit the contradictions of Christian rhetoric of salvation of Blacks while keeping them in bondage, whereas Claude McKay, two centuries later, defiantly challenges the dehumanizing of Africans in the Christian West. Based on Afrocentricity and Stylistic as theoretical framework, this paper highlights how both poet use their texts as vehicle for resistance while denouncing Christian hypocrisy and its dehumanizing nature. Keywords: Christian hypocrisy, African American poetics, irony, salvation, redemption
