Abstract
Abstract
Abstract This article examines comedian Tig Notaro as a modern Italian American archetype, embodying Fred Gardaphé’s vision of a forward-thinking, inclusive ethnic identity. By analyzing her role as Jett Reno in Star Trek: Discovery and Starfleet Academy, this study explores the “blurring” of actor and character—a long-standing Star Trek tradition seen previously with Leonard Nimoy and Kate Mulgrew. The analysis begins with an overview of the sci-fi franchise and Notaro's career through the lens of Gardaphé’s scholarship on humor. It then traces the history of Italian representation in the Trek universe, positioning Reno as a “worthy standard-bearer” and the first major Italian character to command a Starfleet vessel. Ultimately, DiPaolo contends that Notaro's deadpan, antifascist persona offers a powerful symbolic payoff. In an era of global political polarization, Star Trek frames the future as a choice between utopia and extinction. By placing an Italian woman at the helm in the thirty-second century, the franchise challenges the global Italian diaspora to consider its role in shaping a pluralistic future. Reno represents a shift away from reactionary nostalgia toward a speculative futurism where Italian identity remains vital and progressive.
