Abstract
Abstract
Abstract Thanks to the advancement of the superconducting materials, extensive theoretical research, conceptual design, and prototype development have been carried out for superconducting machines, in application to electric aircraft. To achieve the highest power density of motors, superconducting armature windings are of great interest. Limited by the DC bus voltage and power output, superconducting armature windings are required to be multiple parallel tapes to carry higher currents. However, due to inductance and resistance difference of parallel tapes of a superconducting coil, each tape carries a current with a different phase angle and amplitude from the average supply current, which leads to higher AC losses. Meanwhile, the rotating magnetic field from rotor magnets induces circulating currents inside the parallel tapes and further raises the loss. To account for the coupling effects of parallel tapes, this paper develops a field-circuit coupled model based on the T–A formulation, and the accuracy of the model is verified by experimental tests. The research results show that uneven current sharing and induced circulating currents in the parallel tapes increase the AC loss to approximately twice that obtained under the equal-current-sharing assumption.
