Abstract

Abstract

The study examined government tax policies on economic performance in Nigeria for the period 2007-2025. The study used to use Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as economic indicator and as the dependent variable; while Petroleum Profit Tax (PPT), Company Income Tax (CIT) and Custom and Excise Duty (CED) were used as independent variables to measure the economic performance in Nigeria. Secondary data was collected from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin and were analysed using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression method. It was revealed that about 58% of the variations in the dependent variable are explained by the independent variables. The study concluded that Government tax policies have a positive significant impact on economic performance in Nigeria. However, the study recommended that the government should embark on the strategic pursuit of broadening the economy to enhance economic growth and development as well as becoming meticulous in the fight against corruption in Nigeria as it is one of the factors that has led to diversion of public fund especially from petroleum profit tax. Also, government agencies should effectively devise procedures for the collection of company income tax as it contributes to economic growth as reported in the findings.
