Abstract

Abstract

Despite its recognised ecological importance, the central Aures massif still lacks an integrated assessment combining ground-based floristic diversity with satellite-derived indicators of vegetation condition, a gap that limits evidence-based conservation planning in this Mediterranean mountain system. This study addresses this gap by combining field-based floristic surveys with satellite-derived spectral indices. Floristic inventories conducted during spring 2023 across 78 plots recorded 86 vascular plant species belonging to 20 families, dominated by Asteraceae (18.6%) and Poaceae (15.1%). The biological spectrum was dominated by chamaephytes (27.9%) and therophytes (23.3%), and chorological analysis showed a strong Mediterranean component (67.4%) and a notable endemic fraction (20.9%). Species diversity indices yielded H′ = 3.486, J′ = 0.783, and D = 0.966. Vegetation condition, assessed using a Landsat-9 OLI-2 image (April 2023) through the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Bare Soil Index (BI), showed a mean NDVI of 0.268 ± 0.077, a significant positive correlation with altitude (R = 0.410, p < 0.001), and a significant negative relationship with BI (R = −0.542, p < 0.001). By jointly analysing floristic structure and NDVI/BI spatial patterns, this study shows that the pronounced dominance of disturbance-adapted life forms on the ground is spatially consistent with the widespread "light vegetation" class detected from Landsat-9 imagery, providing a replicable baseline for monitoring degradation and guiding grazing management in the central Aures.
