Abstract

Abstract

The COVID-19 lockdown has brought psychological repercussions for university students, causing alterations in academic performance and an increase in everyday self-harming behaviors. The objective of the study was to identify the risk factors related to self-injurious behaviors that contribute to school violence in virtual academic environments. A quantitative study with an exploratory–descriptive design was conducted. A 5-level Likert-type instrument was applied, ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The sample consisted of 1,527 undergraduate psychology students from the second, fourth, sixth, and eighth semesters. The results reported factors associated with eating disorders, sleep hygiene, everyday use of harmful substances, excessive use of video games and social media, and suicidal ideation. It is necessary to develop socioemotional skills and self-care behaviors among students to prevent self-directed violence caused by post-pandemic virtual academic environments.
