Abstract

Abstract

Abstract Polymeric nanocomposites (PNCs) are formed by dispersing fillers with at least one dimension in the 1–100 nm range in a polymer matrix, and the resulting materials often outperform either constituent alone. Because the interfacial area per unit volume scales inversely with the smallest filler dimension, a few volumes per cent of well-dispersed nanofiller can alter the mechanical, electrical, optical, magnetic and gas-barrier properties of the host polymer, at loadings substantially lower than those required with conventional micro-scale fillers. These benefits have attracted increasing attention from sectors such as water treatment, flexible electronics, aerospace shielding and food preservation. This review provides a thematically organised and critical overview of the PNC field. It first sets out the structure–property fundamentals (interfacial area, interphase volume, filler aspect ratio and dispersion state) that link nanoscale structure to macroscopic performance. It then compares four established fabrication routes (melt blending, in situ polymerisation, solution mixing and electrospinning) in terms of dispersion quality, interfacial bonding, scalability and environmental burden. Smart PNCs that respond to heat, light, electric and magnetic fields are compared with respect to mechanism, representative systems, advantages and limitations. The application sections compile quantitative data on dye and heavy-metal removal, sensing performance (detection limits and linear ranges), electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness and shelf-life extension, and discuss safety, migration and regulatory requirements for food-contact and biomedical uses together with life-cycle considerations. Finally, the review identifies persistent bottlenecks (filler agglomeration, cost, reproducibility, toxicological uncertainty and regulatory gaps) and sets out research priorities, including scale-up, long-term durability, standardised testing and techno-economic assessment, that could accelerate responsible commercialisation.
