Abstract
Abstract
This article discusses the Great Northern War in British political public discussion during the reign of King George I, in 1715–1721. With this example, I demonstrate the importance of foreign policy in the political public sphere of the era by studying various newspapers and prints. George I changed the traditional British pro-Swedish policy in order to help his homeland Hanover in its war against Sweden, despite legal limitations set for the king’s power. Because of this, Swedish ministers planned cooperation and possible invasion with British Jacobite rebels. This plot caused a public political and diplomatic crisis in early 1717. After the death of Charles XII of Sweden in late 1718 and a peace resolution between Hanover and Sweden in 1719, the king’s interests was to restrain Russian expansion. The government used both reason and propaganda to secure support for these policies, but it was not always successful due to widespread public scepticism. I propose that comprehensive study of similar cases helps to understand the public sphere and press in this era, especially regarding the little-studied theme of foreign policy. Keywords: public sphere, Hanoverian Britain, the age of enlightenment, foreign policy debate, propaganda, the Great Northern War
