Abstract

Abstract

This article examines economic policies toward Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples during the early Qing period (1684–1874) through documentary analysis. Major policies included the tongshi system, the Aboriginal Affairs Subprefect, restrictions on reclamation, acculturation and education, and tax reductions. These measures aimed to maintain social order, regulate Indigenous–Han relations, protect Indigenous livelihoods, and facilitate economic development. Although they promoted agricultural development, commercial exchange, and social integration, Han reclamation and land transfers also caused displacement and reduced traditional Indigenous territories, reflecting the coexistence of protection and development, integration and conflict.
