Abstract
This poetic essay proposes an inventory of animal protests based on escapes, refusals, and interruptions enacted by nonhuman animals. From the escape of Inky the octopus to Eris’s persistent return to his former home and the collective liberation initiated by Fred the goat, the text examines how animal bodies disobey the places, paths, and behaviors assigned to them by the speciesist order. It questions institutional vocabularies that translate resistance into aggression, anomaly, or a management problem, while warning against the ableist risk of recognizing agency only in those who are able to escape. In dialogue with Sarat Colling and Sunaura Taylor’s Animal Protest, the essay considers wild alliances, hospitality, and the material conditions of every escape. The painting emerges as an assembly of heterogeneous bodies that, without becoming one, withdraw their affects and movements from the Human gaze and rehearse other forms of political proximity within a shared political world.
