Abstract

Abstract

Aqueous reactions of nickel(II) nitrate, propane-1,3-diamine, and either naphthalene-1,5-disulfonic acid or disodium naphthalene-2,6-disulfonate produced crystals of trans -diaquabis(propane-1,3-diamine-κ 2 N , N ′)nickel(II) naphthalene-1,5-disulfonate, (I), and trans -diaquabis(propane-1,3-diamine-κ 2 N , N ′)nickel(II) naphthalene-2,6-disulfonate, (II), both [Ni(C 3 H 10 N 2 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ](C 10 H 6 O 6 S 2 ), in high yields. (I) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P 2 1 / c while (II) crystallizes in the triclinic space group P 1 . In both structures, the cation and anion rest on centers of inversion. The nickel cations display trans octahedral coordination of two water molecules and two bidentate propane-1,3-diamine molecules with Ni—O/N bond distances in the ranges 2.0960 (9)–2.1205 (7) Å (I) and 2.1110 (7)–2.1181 (9) Å (II). The packing in both structures features alternating layers of complex cations and naphthalenedisulfonate anions held together by O—H...O and N—H...O hydrogen bonds between the water and amine groups of the ligands and the sulfonate groups of the anions. These are the first metal salts of naphthalene-1,5-disulfonate and naphthalene-2,6-disulfonate that contain propane-1,3-diamine. The packing in (I) and (II) is compared to each other and to those found in other nickel salts of the anions.
