Abstract

Abstract

The Commonwealth connects 2.5 billion people across 56 member states, generating scholarly discourse that spans multiple disciplines. This paper applies computational methods to analyse the thematic evolution of Commonwealth research over its 75-year history. Using probabilistic topic modelling to examine 73 million words from 9,649 digitised scholarly publications, we identify 15 distinct research themes that align with six key aspects of the Commonwealth’s agenda. Our findings reveal how scholarly focus has shifted across four historical periods (1949 - present), highlighting the transformation in research priorities from environmental management and cultural exchange towards governance and rights in recent years. We identify notable misalignments between academic research emphasis and the 2013 Commonwealth Charter priorities, particularly regarding youth engagement, civil society partnerships, and digital transformation. This computational analysis contributes to the understanding of the Commonwealth as a ‘network of networks’ while identifying critical research gaps that require attention as the institution navigates what scholars characterise as a fundamental ‘Change of Era’ in global governance. The paper concludes by suggesting targeted academic research directions that more closely align with the Commonwealth’s evolving institutional priorities.
