Concealing to Confess, Fabricating to Reveal: The Two Diaries of Louise Erdrich’s Shadow Tag

Abstract

Abstract

This article challenges the assumption that authenticity resides in unmediated confession. Louise Erdrich’s Shadow Tag (2010) stages this assumption through Irene America’s two notebooks—a blue diary locked in a bank vault and addressed to no one, and a red diary hidden at home where her husband Gil is meant to find it—inviting readers to treat the private notebook as the site of Irene’s true self. This article argues instead that the two diaries represent parallel practices of concealment rather than opposing registers of truth and fabrication. The blue diary conceals through selective confession, narrating a self shaped by an internalised, judging addressee even in physical privacy; the red diary reveals through fabrication, its calculated inventions bounded and ultimately betrayed by the very attachments they are designed to disguise. The article shows that Irene’s subjectivity emerges not within either notebook but in the discrepancy between them, and extends this claim to the marriage plot, where Gil’s demand for total knowledge of his wife is exposed as a mistaken model of intimacy. Concealment, the article concludes, is not an obstacle to Irene’s selfhood but the condition of its production.
