Abstract
Abstract
Mario Puzo occupies a unique position in twentieth-century American literature as one of the most influential writers whose works transcend the boundaries of crime fiction and become profound explorations of American identity, ethnicity, morality, and power. Although Puzo is commonly associated with “The Godfather” (1969), his literary contribution extends far beyond a single bestseller. His novels transformed public perceptions of organized crime by integrating sociological realism, psychological complexity, and philosophical reflections on family loyalty, capitalism, justice, and the American Dream. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of Mario Puzo’s literary legacy on contemporary American literature through a philological analysis of his narrative techniques, thematic innovations, stylistic characteristics, and intertextual legacy. The research applies comparative literary analysis, narrative criticism, stylistic analysis, and cultural studies methodology to examine how Puzo’s works contributed to the evolution of American crime fiction and influenced later generations of writers. Particular attention is devoted to narrative structure, multilingual discourse, characterization, symbolism, and the representation of ethnic identity within multicultural American society. The article argues that Puzo fundamentally redefined the gangster novel by combining elements of classical tragedy, family saga, historical fiction, and political narrative. His literary innovations have influenced contemporary authors such as Don Winslow, Dennis Lehane, George Pelecanos, Richard Price, and others who continue to explore issues of crime, social hierarchy, corruption, and moral ambiguity. Furthermore, Puzo’s works have shaped not only literary traditions but also broader American popular culture, including cinema, television, and digital storytelling. The study concludes that Mario Puzo should be regarded not merely as a popular novelist but as one of the key figures in the development of modern American narrative prose whose artistic achievements continue to influence literary production in the twenty-first century. Keywords: Mario Puzo, American literature, crime fiction, literary influence, narrative techniques, family saga, intertextuality, American Dream, organized crime, contemporary fiction.
