Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT This work investigates the mutual relationship between contact ratio and tooth root crack propagation in spur gears, with particular focus on the influence of meshing stiffness and load sharing on the tooth root lifetime. An experimental case study originally reported by Rettig, in which SN curves of gears with similar geometry but different nominal contact ratios suggest this relationship. Hence, these experimental cases are re‐examined by means of modern numerical techniques.
