This article aims to analyze wage trends in Mexico’s automotive industry since 2018, a year that marked the beginning of a transformation in labor and wage policy under the government of the so-called Fourth Transformation, the implementation of labor reform, and, subsequently, the labor chapter of the USMCA. As demonstrated in this study, despite triumphalist narratives that point to improved wage conditions for workers in export-oriented sectors, wage trends in the automotive industry—the backbone of the reproduction of Mexico’s productive apparatus—have not been encouraging. Although value added in this industry has tended to increase, wages in the automotive industry have increasingly stagnated, while enormous wage gaps persist between automotive workers in Mexico and the United States.
