Abstract

Abstract

Abstract After a brief overview of the main concepts on the origin of the festival idea per se, this article investigates the relation of the Salzburg festival to post-imperialism. The analysis focuses on Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874–1929), one of the main ideologues of the festival and an important contributor to its program. In World War I era, he was a promoter of the ideal of the supranational empire. The turning point in his understanding was his trip to Prague in 1917. The design of the Salzburg festival (founded in 1920) reflects important changes in Hofmannsthal’s thinking. The text explores the vision of the post-imperial “Austrianness” negotiated through the festival’s mission.
