Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article examines the ambivalent reception of a French lieu de mémoire , a cast of Emmanuel Frémiet's equestrian statue of Joan of Arc, when transplanted to New Orleans. Through a study of archival materials between 1958 and 1999, I argue that French and American stakeholders engage with the statue to position themselves in relation to one another, often in idealized ways. While the statue's care became a site for the maintenance of Franco-American relations, repeated failures of popular support indicate the challenges of incorporating a French-inflected past into an American present.
