Using Chinese A-share listed firms, this study treats the establishment of circuit courts by the Supreme People’s Court as a quasi-natural experiment in judicial environment improvement. We find that judicial improvement reduces litigation frequency and amount, with effects strengthening over time. AI application further reinforces these reductions: software investment strengthens them, whereas hardware investment weakens them. AI’s moderating effect is stronger among firms with weaker internal controls and stronger external monitoring. The direct risk-reduction effect is concentrated in non-state-owned firms; AI moderates both litigation measures in state-owned firms but primarily litigation amount in non-state-owned firms.
