In Art on My Mind: Visual Politics (1995), bell hooks lays out the foundations of what she calls visual politics: a ield of contention related to the ways in which we attribute meaning to art and, consequently, to the ways in which we approach it and relate to it. Against this background, two canonical perspectives on understanding art and the aesthetic experience emerge as traditional approaches: formalism and aestheticism. In opposition to these, hooks raises objections, suggesting perspectives related to what she called critical thinking about art: the understanding that art is a production informed by the political sphere and that the aesthetic experience is an experience of saturation informed by the existential situationality of the subjects. This understanding is directly related to education, a central field of philosophical consideration for hooks. This paper unfolds through a reconstruction and analysis of hooks’ arguments in Art on My Mind: Visual Politics (1995).
