Abstract
Abstract
This work offers Brazilian Portuguese translations of a set of Greek and Latin epigrammatic texts revolving around a common theme, the famous sculpture of a heifer made by the Athenian Myron, including some compositions from Book IX of the Palatine Anthology and their recreations, translations, or emulations in late Antiquity, particularly by Ausonius (an author clearly more influenced by the Greek epigrammatists than by Martial) and the anonymous writers in the Epigrammata Bobiensia (a collection, in turn, clearly influenced by the poet from Bordeaux). In all these compositions, we can see the interartistic dialogue between sculpture and literature and, in some of them, the topos that the work of art – not only made, but almost generated – finds in poetry that which ultimately consecrates it as a living being: the possibility of speaking. Our translations are based on the hexametric experiments of Carlos Alberto Nunes, an emulator of ancient hexameter into vernacular, although here we extend his method to the pentameter of elegiac couplets and to iambic trimeters and dimeters.
