This article analyses the prevailing thought in Páez de Ribera’s Florisando (1510). It demonstrates that not just religious aspects explain this thought, but also the constant defence of the social group of the «letrados». Although knighthood is still seen as a noble class, its sphere is limited to the military realm. Thus, Florisando substitutes chivalric ideals with the letrados ideology. This book states that the royal advisor must be a learned and literate (letrado) person, not just a religious one. In this sense, it aligns with the political strategies of the Catholic Monarchs, during whose reign this social group was predominant in the Consejo Real, not the noblemen.
