This article analyzes the cultural initiatives produced by the Casa de Cultura Ney Alberto, a cultural facility run by the municipal government of Nova Iguaçu, and their role in shaping a collective memory about the city’s history and culture. Opened in 2004 and located in a central area of the city, the Casa de Cultura occupies a 1930s mansion that functions as an art gallery, hosting free exhibitions. Drawing on discussions from sociology, anthropology, and history on the phenomenon of collective memory, the analysis focuses on the process of transforming the building into a cultural facility, understood as a process of heritage-making, and the narratives present in exhibition catalogs from 2019 to 2022. As a result, we understand these actions as products of a framing of regional history promoted by the intervention of actors belonging to the ruling elites of Nova Iguaçu – both past and present – with a view to shaping an official history of Nova Iguaçu linked to their political, economic, and cultural interests and activities.
