Abstract
Abstract
This study analysed the impact of drought on jowar cultivation in the North Eastern Dry Zone of Karnataka by comparing normal and drought years. The findings showed that drought considerably reduced crop yield, gross returns, net returns and returns per rupee invested. Farmers reduced expenditure on fertilisers, labour and plant protection chemicals due to lower yield expectations and financial constraints. The regression results further showed that severe drought conditions and the interaction between drought region and drought year significantly reduced jowar yield, highlighting its vulnerability to prolonged drought stress. The findings highlighted the need for timely availability of quality seed at affordable prices during drought years and strengthening location-specific drought management practices to reduce yield losses and improve the economic stability of jowar farmers.
