Abstract

Abstract

Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake (2003) explores the social conflicts experienced by Indian immigrants and their American-born children. The novel portrays the Ganguli family’s struggle to balance Bengali traditions with American social values. Through the experiences of Ashima, Ashoke, Gogol and Moushumi, Lahiri examines cultural displacement, generational differences, identity crisis, racial discrimination, family expectations and the search for belonging. The protagonist, Gogol Ganguli, experiences conflict between his inherited cultural identity and his desire to establish an independent life in America. This paper analyses how social conflict shapes individual identity and family relationships in the novel. It argues that Lahiri presents identity as a continuing process of negotiation between personal choices, cultural traditions and social expectations.
