A NEW PROPOSAL FOR READING THE MODERNIST WORK: MACUNAÍMA

This article reflects on the importance of reading complete literary works in high school. The objective is not only to discuss the relevance of reading complete literary works in relation to the use of excerpts, but also to propose reading mediation strategies that may assist teachers in mediating these works with the target audience. The study adopts a qualitative approach, an applied nature, and bibliographic research procedures, since both the discussion and the proposed strategies are grounded in studies on literary reader education and reading mediation, in dialogue with recent research on the teaching of classics in high school. The literary corpus consists of Macunaíma, by Mário de Andrade, with its first chapter delimited as the analytical corpus for demonstrating the proposed strategies. The results present possibilities for mediating the complete reading of the novel through the activation of prior, linguistic, and world knowledge, hypothesis formulation, glossary development, dialogue with other artistic manifestations, and the use of digital environments. It is concluded that these strategies offer possibilities for planning the complete reading of the novel, articulated with its characteristics and the students’ realities, without disregarding the use of excerpts as a mediation resource.
