Abstract

Abstract

This essay argues that Ocean Vuong’s The Emperor of Gladness (2025) is structured by a sustained logic of substitution in which acknowledged fakes generate the only available form of the real. From BJ’s “famous” cornbread, marketed as “Thanksgiving every day of the year” yet secretly made with vanilla cake mix, to amateur wrestling, WWII reenactments, fictive professional identities, and improvised coworker kinship, the novel stages what I call the counterfeit real. Drawing on Sianne Ngai’s theory of the gimmick, Anna Kornbluh’s critique of immediacy, and Lauren Berlant’s concept of cruel optimism, I suggest Vuong develops a counter-immediate aesthetics in which mediation and overt fabrication become the conditions of intimacy in post-recession Connecticut. Rather than redeeming the real, the novel posits the counterfeit as the most viable (though never innocent) form of care and solidarity under institutional collapse.
