Abstract

Abstract

This study observes the demonstration of ideology in news discourse of transitivity and modality in Pakistani and in international media through a comparative analysis. Based on (SFL) Systemic Functional Linguistics, the research paper observes how ideational and interpersonal meanings are constructed in selected news reports from Dawn News and BBC News during the US-Iran ceasefire period (April 2026). A mixed method approach has been used, combining both qualitative clause-level analysis with limited quantitative observations. The findings of the research paper suggest that the selected samples from Dawn News incline to focus agency through active constructions and explicit actors. In contrast to Pakistani Dawn News, the international news BBC News samples show a comparatively higher use of hedging expressions and passive constructions, where agency is being back grounded or maybe omitted at some level. In positions of modality, Pakistan’s Dawn News appears to employ higher certainty of modal expressions like “will” in the analyzed data, whereas international BBC News determines comparatively more probabilistic terminologies such as “could”, “May” etc. These configurations are taken as tendencies within the selected corpus rather than indiscriminate characteristics of the media organization. The study pays to Systemic Functional linguistic (SFL) based media discourse analysis by offering a very cautious comparative perspective on how representations of agency and certainty in news reporting shaped by the linguistic choices. Keywords: Modality, Transitivity, Systemic Functional linguistics, News Discourse, Dawn online, BBC News.
