Emperor Tewodros II of Ethiopia: Between Contested Narratives and Historical Reality

Ethiopia was fractured by various regional warlords prior to Kassa Hailu’s ascension to power. Multiple sources assert that Tewodros II was the one who initiated the formation of modern Ethiopia. Tewodros II’s ethnic background is a disputed issue among both historical and modern authors. Consequently, the issue with which this study in concerned involves the considerable variance in ethnic backgrounds proposed by professional and amateur writers. Some recent politically-driven writers assert that his parents originate from outside Amhara. The principal objective of this article is to ascertain the ethnic identity of Emperor Tewodros II, his place of birth and upbringing, and to furnish academic insights for both novice and experienced writers. A qualitative research methodology and a case study framework were used for this examination. The evidence indicates that Princess Atitegeb Wondwossen was born at Amba Mariam near Enfranz, and that both of her parents were of Amhara origin. Kassa Hailu, later Emperor Tewodros II, was born to Hailu Wolde Giyorgis and Atitegeb Wondwossen in Dembea, not in Quara. His lineage traces back to the Amhara, and descendants of Emperor Tewodros II still reside in Quara, Alefa Takusa, Enfranz, and Belesa.
