Abstract
Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze whether family affective involvement (functional and dysfunctional) and functional independence predict depressive symptoms in older adults attending a senior community center in Monterrey, Nuevo León. A quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive, and predictive design was employed. The sample consisted of 47 older adults aged between 61 and 87 years (M = 71.33, SD = 6.84). Data were collected using the Family Functioning Assessment (EFF), the Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living, and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Results from a multiple linear regression analysis indicated that the model was statistically significant (F(3, 43) = 3.477, p = .024), explaining 14.2% of the variance in depressive symptoms. Among the predictors analyzed, only dysfunctional affective involvement was found to be a significant predictor of depression (β = .345). These findings suggest that negative family dynamics and dysfunctional emotional interactions may increase depressive symptoms among older adults. The results highlight the importance of strengthening family emotional support and implementing psychosocial interventions aimed at improving family relationships and psychological well-being in this population.
