This article focuses on two newspapers published by Spanish migrants in French Algeria during the 1880s, El Correo Español (Oran) and El Patuet (Algiers). It analyses how these publications reflected on identity and belonging within a colonial context. El Correo Español addressed issues concerning migrant labour and advocated for Spanish colonial expansion, in Morocco or elsewhere, to accommodate unemployed working-class populations. The title El Patuet was a deliberate reappropriation of a derogatory term; its editors asserted their ability to transform a pejorative word into a badge of honour. These sources reveal the limitations and hierarchies inherent in Algerian settler society, as well as some of the strategies employed by the Spanish in Algeria regarding coexistence, integration or assimilation within the French settler-colonial framework of the 1880s.
