Abstract
Abstract
The subject of this research is one of the most controversial events of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) – the Battle of Calcinato on April 19, 1706. The objective of the article is pursuant to the contem-poraries’ testimonies to identify the peculiar features of the preparation for the military operation carring out as well as its consequences, the French keys to success, and the defeat of the Imperial army. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that in Russian historiography, this military operation has not yet been translated in any scientific texts. The paper established that during the Battle of Calcinato, the army of Louis XIV under the com-mand of Marshal Vendôme inflicted a crushing defeat on the imperial army of General Reventlau. Such ele-ments of tactics as making a decision to engage in battle, assessing the terrain, misleading the enemy and ensuring unexpectedness, determining the direction of the main efforts, and the use of infantry and cavalry are considered. The main reasons for the French victory are supposed to be, on the one side, Marshal Vendôme’s generalship, and, per contra, serious mistakes made by the imperial command. It is noted that the success of Calcinato did not lead to the final defeat of the imperial forces and was the last tactical success of the French in Italy.
