Abstract

Abstract

The article substantiates the theoretical and methodological foundations of adaptive strategic scaling of an enterprise’s financial and economic potential under market turbulence. The study’s relevance stems from increasing instability in demand, cost of capital, prices and logistics, technological shifts, and competitive pressure, under which a conventional focus on quantitative business growth may weaken rather than strengthen an enterprise’s financial sustainability. The article develops a conceptual approach to adaptive strategic scaling that combines expanding market and operating activities with maintaining liquidity, solvency, profitability, resource balance, and the enterprise’s ability to rapidly reconfigure its financial and economic potential in response to changes in the external environment. The methodological framework combines systemic, resource-based, process, and strategic approaches, along with methods of comparison, generalization, structural and logical analysis, ratio analysis, and scenario modeling. The study clarifies the differences between growth, scaling, and adaptive strategic scaling. Adaptive strategic scaling is proposed as a managed process of anticipatory or corrective expansion in which the rates of resource attraction and reallocation align with financial capacity, market capacity, operational flexibility, and an acceptable level of risk. Scaling should not target an isolated resource but the configuration of the enterprise’s financial and economic potential, comprising financial, production and resource, market, innovation and investment, and organizational and digital components. We propose an adaptive management loop that integrates turbulence diagnostics, assessment of scaling reserves, scenario selection, determination of financial and economic thresholds, implementation of scaling decisions, and feedback control. The authors develop an indicator of adaptive scaling performance as the ratio of the relative increase in target results to the relative increase in the resource base, adjusted by coefficients reflecting adaptive capacity, financial sustainability, and market turbulence risk. The approach distinguishes expansion that generates a disproportionate increase in business results from resource-intensive quantitative growth. The practical value of the proposed approach lies in preventing excessive scaling, identifying when financial and operational constraints begin to outweigh the benefits of expansion, and supporting timely transitions between accelerated scaling, selective expansion, stabilization, and controlled contraction. This enables an enterprise to preserve strategic controllability and financial resilience while exploiting market opportunities arising in turbulent conditions.
