This essay reflects on the meaning and limitations of bearing witness to genocide through the author’s experiences as a Palestinian writer, former journalist, and researcher from Gaza. Drawing on personal memories of repeated Israeli military aggressions, the bombing of her family home, and her work documenting Palestinian lives, the essay examines how mainstream Anglophone media frequently obscures violence through neutralizing and dehumanizing language. It considers the crisis of witnessing in an era when atrocities are broadcast in real time but fail to generate meaningful political intervention. The essay also traces the author’s decision to leave journalism and pursue doctoral research on systematic attacks against Gaza’s healthcare system. It argues that testimony, writing, and research remain necessary not because witnessing alone can end violence, but because they create an enduring record of what was seen, what was known, and how institutions and governments chose to respond.
