Abstract

Le Monde de René Descartes présente une physique non conventionnelle, qui se démarque nettement de la science de ses contemporains en empruntant une voie inhabituelle. Le texte s’ouvre sur un motif traditionnel dans la philosophie occidentale – la séparation de l’homme et de la nature, et les problèmes liés à la perception, qui seront adressés par après au titre du dualisme cartésien. Toutefois, les premières réflexions physiques de Descartes tentent de combler ce fossé, en articulant une conception innovante de la nature. Dans Le Monde , la nature est construite selon une démarche rationnelle qui la réduit à un ordre géométrique, conformément à l’identification cartésienne de la nature et des artefacts. Cependant, la nature y apparaît également comme une entité autonome, qui se dévoile certes à l’observation attentive des hommes, mais qui agit aussi par elle-même. Dans cet article, j’examine comment la création de la nature par Descartes est à la fois un objet d’opération intellectuelle et un objet nécessairement soumis à la vision humaine, aussi autonome et indépendante soit-elle. Cela fait du Monde une contribution originale et importante à l’écologie philosophique prémoderne de la nature.
