Enduring Traditions: Why Colonial Educational Reforms Failed in Southern Vietnam

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the relative failure of colonial educational reforms in Southern Vietnam through a historical–institutional approach, emphasizing the role of “enduring traditions” rooted in the pre-colonial period. Drawing on Nguyễn dynasty historical sources and contemporary scholarship, the study argues that the educational foundations of the South were not solely state-driven but were also strongly shaped by community-based initiatives, particularly networks of Confucian scholars and private teaching practices. This “dual-origin” structure produced a flexible educational ecosystem capable of adapting to and sustaining moral and scholarly values even in the face of impositions from the French educational system. The article demonstrates that colonial reforms–characterized by top-down imposition and weak alignment with indigenous social structures–were unable to fully displace traditional educational institutions. In doing so, the study contributes to explaining the continuity of Vietnamese scholarly culture and offers a representative case for broader discussions on the interaction between external institutional models and indigenous knowledge systems in colonial contexts.
