Abstract
Abstract
This article analyzes the emergence of new cultural centers and museums in Brazil during the 1980s, a period marked by social mobilization in defense of democracy and, simultaneously, by the resumption of academic discussions that brought up themes such as urban reform, post-Brasília architecture, and postmodernism. Issues raised during that period by the new buildings for cultural use are revisited, especially regarding the ways in which the public appropriates their spaces. After identifying a new situation in the country where large cultural centers, the result of public initiatives, coexist with smaller centers dedicated to more specific issues, the study focuses on the buildings designed for these institutions. The study then analyzes some works, selected based on criteria of accessibility, diversity, and relevance. Instead of a linear history, the article traces some architectural propositions and the concepts that underpin them. The analysis aims to identify the main architectural characteristics, and then to connect them to ideas of a technical, aesthetic, or sociocultural nature. This process takes into account the relationship with the surroundings, routes to the main spaces, structure and materiality.
