Abstract
This article aims to offer a thorough study and the first Spanish translation of a work of the Mirabilia genre known as Mirabilia urbis Romae. This was a guidebook written in Latin around 1140-1143 describing monuments and legends of Rome. Emerging in the context of medieval pilgrimage, it was intended to guide the faithful through the Holy City by means of topographical descriptions, hagiographic accounts and legends, thus blending reality and myth to connect classical Rome with Christian Rome. In this sense, the text reflects both the fascination with antiquity and the papal desire to symbolically control urban space. Throughout these pages, the authorship of the work is also studied, as well as its later fortune and its inclusion in compilations such as the Liber polypticus or the Liber censuum. Lastly, the internal structure of the composition is examined by means of a brief survey of the themes and legends that are developed throughout its thirty two chapters.
