Abstract
Abstract
This biographical profile examines the life and legacy of John Alexander Weir (1894–1942), the first dean of the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law. Drawing on family history, the article begins by exploring how Weir’s upbringing and the influence of his father and siblings shaped his academic ambitions and public service. It traces his remarkable trajectory from an outstanding student and Rhodes Scholar, through military service through the First World War and jurisprudence studies at Merton College, Oxford, to his leadership establishing Alberta’s first full-time law school. It argues that Weir’s scholarly outlook, institutional vision, and enduring influence on legal education secured his place as a foundational figure in Canadian legal history.
