Abstract

Abstract

The conclusion of The Golden Bowl is frequently canonized as Maggie Verver’s moral apotheosis – a delicate preservation of the family unit through what appears to be sacrificial love. Yet such redemptive readings often gloss over the chillingly ruthless strategic logic that underpins her “success.” By mapping the mechanics of Game Theory onto the novel’s final act, this article re-evaluates Maggie not as a passive martyr, but as a masterful tactician navigating a latent Prisoner’s Dilemma. Rather than seeking a conventional confrontation, Maggie leverages the strategic power of the unsaid, exploiting severe information asymmetry to paralyze her husband and stepmother. She effectively forces a rigid Nash Equilibrium: a state of social stasis where any deviation by the Prince or Charlotte would invite mutual annihilation. This study contends that the “golden” stability Maggie achieves is a product of systemic containment rather than genuine emotional reconciliation. In Henry James’s late masterpiece, the “optimal” solution emerges as a hauntingly desolate one, where the marriage is salvaged only by sacrificing authentic intimacy at the altar of a flawless, but hollow, social contract.
